About

Alim graduated from the Maldives College of Higher Education (now the Maldives National University) in 2006, and was admitted to the Maldives bar in the same year. Alim completed LL.M at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011. Before moving to full time private law practice, Alim worked at the Attorney General’s Office, and in his capacity as a Senior State Counsel was a senior supervisor of the Litigation Division, and represented the state in multi-million-dollar tourism-related cases, major cases filed against the State and constitutional motions. In addition to drafting bills, Alim also advised all government agencies. Notably, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Economic Development on numerous matters.

Later, Alim joined the Parliament as a Senior Legal Counsel, and was providing legal advice to the Speaker and the Secretary General of the Parliament on various matters. Moreover, Alim was overseeing the Legislative Department (committee affairs) of the Parliament, and as such involved in the drafting stages of the bills in Committees, advising Members of Parliament on all matters deliberated in the Committees. Moreover, in that capacity, Alim also advised on the loan agreements where the government of Maldives was a party to and sovereign guarantees issued by the government that were, under relevant laws, sent to the Public Finance Committee.

His relevant recent experience includes:

  1. Assisted in advising an India-based construction company to develop housing units in the Maldives;
  2. Assisted in advising an International Company on maritime accidents in the Maldives;
  3. Advising a UAE based company on intellectual property law in the Maldives;
  4. Assisted in advising a Swiss based company on aviation related matter in the Maldives;
  5. Assisting the main counsel to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company plc (MTCC);
  6. Representing the Mauritius Commercial Bank (Maldives) Pvt Ltd on major banking fraud cases in the courts and government agencies, including Central Bank; and
  7. Representing Ooredoo Maldives plc, WARF Maldives Pvt Ltd and Traders Hotel Pvt Ltd, Ridgewood Hotels and Suits Pvt Ltd, MTCC among others in the courts.
