Dhaanish’s practice is primarily focused banking and finance, corporate and commercial and hospitality practice.

Dhaanish has extensive experience in acting for international banks, lenders, financial institutions and debt funds on various debt finance facilities, including acquisition finance, projects and Infrastructure finance, and debt products. Some of his notable experiences include:

  • Advising Aareal Bank AG on the USD 400 million loan facilities to Blackstone Group on the acquisition of Conrad Maldives, and Anantara Hotels.
  • Advising ICBC on the USD 358 million loan facilities to Housing Development Corporation, for construction of social housing units by a Chinese parastatal company.
  • Advising IFC and other development banks on a USD 100 million loan facility to Bank of Maldives for financing Maldives resort hotel owners impacted by COVID. 
  • Advising Ad Hoc group of lenders on the enforcement and restructuring of an airline business in Maldives.

Dhaanish has also has extensive transaction and advisory experience in the hospitality sector, including on sales and acquisitions, lease structures, and HMAs. Some his notable experiences include:

  • Advising Coastline Group on the sale of Finolhu Resort (operational resort) to Seaside Hotels.
  • Advising Chip Eng Seng Group on the acquisition of a lagoon and subsequent joint venture with Amin Construction for development of a Hyatt property.
  • Advising Atmosphere Hotels on lease structuring for a lagoon development for construction and operation of a 350-key property.
  • Advising the owners of One&Only Reethi Rah on the restructuring and extensive renegotiation of the HMA for the resort with the Kerzner Group.

Awards and recognition

Dhaanish has been ranked as a ranked lawyer by Asialaw as a Notable Practitioner in 2019 and 2020.

Education and background

Dhaanish read law at undergraduate level from the University of Warwick, UK. Dhaanish subsequently completed the LPC (legal practice course), training to become a solicitor at University of Law (incorporating College of Law). 

Dhaanish has also undertaken training in international arbitration and is a Member of Centre for International Arbitration (CiArb), London. 

Dhaanish has also worked at the legal department of Maldives Monetary Authority and has experience of legislative and regulatory drafting of financial and insurance regulation.
